A well-known supermarket has resorted to putting empty jars of coffee on display in an effort to deter shoplifters. Spar is the latest retailer to take action against increasing cases of theft.

Empty coffee jars on display

A Spar store in Burnley, Lancashire, has implemented new measures to discourage shoplifting. The shelves are now lined with empty coffee jars, as the franchise holder hopes the sight will discourage potential thieves.

Other retailers taking action

This move comes as other high street giants have also taken steps to combat theft of high-value items such as alcohol and steaks. Morrisons, for example, has decided to lock away alcohol in glass cases in some of its stores.

Selection of empty jars

The Spar store in Burnley has a range of empty coffee jars on display. These include a 200g jar of Nescafe Gold Blend priced at £7.25, a 100g jar of L'Or Classic for £6.99, and a 95g jar of Nescafe Gold Blend Alta Rica priced at £5.55. Other empty jars include Nescafe Original, Douwe Egberts Pure Gold, and various Kenco options.

"If you require any items on display please take them to the tills"

A sign on the shelf in the store states, "If you require any items on display please take them to the tills." The only coffee jar with actual coffee in it is the Spar own brand, priced at £2.99.

Reactions from locals

Local residents have expressed their shock at the situation. Dave Gurnett stated, "Poverty and desperation are at record levels. People are relying on shoplifting and food banks to survive." Another local named Craig mentioned, "Expensive jars. Such a shame when they have to go to such lengths to run a business." Dan said, "It's a sad state of affairs really."

Reasons behind the rise in shoplifting

The increase in shoplifting can be attributed to rising supermarket prices amid the cost of living crisis. As Brits struggle to afford basic necessities, theft has seen a significant spike.
