Thousands of Bereaved Households Eligible for Support

Finance expert Martin Lewis is warning households not to miss the deadline to claim tens of thousands of pounds in owed cash. More than 21,000 bereaved households who were previously denied support can now claim bereavement support. This includes cohabiting parents with dependent children who were previously excluded from the help. Lewis is urging those affected to make a claim as soon as possible, as the amounts involved can be life-changing.

Deadline and Eligibility

The deadline for claiming is February 8, 2024. After this date, no claims for Widowed Parent's Allowance will be accepted. Claims for Bereavement Support Payment can still be made, but the amount will be reduced. To qualify for a payment, claimants must have met the eligibility criteria for either bereavement support payment or widowed parent's allowance on or after August 30, 2018. The benefit and amount people are entitled to will depend on when they lost their partner.

How to Claim

You can apply for bereavement support payment online, by telephone, or by post. To apply, you'll need your National Insurance number, bank or building society account details, the date your partner died, and your partner's National Insurance number. The government launched an online claims form on a trial basis, allowing a limited number of daily applications. You can also apply over the phone or by post by downloading and filling in the bereavement support payment BSP1 form from the government website.
