Another Price Hike

Households in the UK are bracing themselves for yet another increase in Council Tax, with a potential rise of five percent. This could result in an extra £100 on monthly bills, hitting families hard in the midst of a financial crisis affecting town halls across the country.

Permission Granted

The Levelling Up Department is expected to grant councils permission to raise taxes by the maximum allowable amount of 4.99 percent from April. Any increase beyond this would require a referendum and the approval of local voters. According to the Guardian, a typical band D council tax bill could see an additional £100 added.

Aid for Struggling Councils

Last week, Michael Gove announced a £600 million bailout for local governments in England, aiming to address the challenges posed by inflation and poor management. However, the Labour Party has accused the government of merely "papering over the cracks."

Temporary Relief

On a positive note, millions of people will enjoy a temporary break from a key household expense. Council tax is typically paid over 10 months, but for those who pay in 10 installments, there will be a two-month reprieve in February and March. This means that during these months, bills will not be issued and payment will not be required.
