National Living Wage to rise to at least £11 per hour

The National Living Wage (NLW) will increase to at least £11 per hour from next year, benefiting approximately two million of the lowest paid workers in the UK. Chancellor Jeremy Hunt will confirm the wage increase in his keynote speech at the Conservative Party conference.

£1,000 annual earnings boost for full-time workers

The rise in the NLW will result in a £1,000 increase in annual earnings for full-time workers starting next year. The government's goal is for the NLW to reach two-thirds of median hourly pay by October 2022.

Commitment to end low pay

In his speech, Mr. Hunt will state that the Conservative Party is committed to ending low pay in the country. He emphasizes that since the introduction of the NLW, nearly two million people have been lifted out of absolute poverty. The current hourly rate for the NLW is £10.42, and regardless of the Low Pay Commission's recommendation, the government plans to increase it to at least £11 per hour next year.

Crackdown on benefits claimants refusing to find work

As part of the government's efforts to encourage people to join the workforce, the Chancellor will crack down on benefits claimants who refuse to find a job. He notes that around 100,000 people leave the labor force each year to rely on benefits, and he believes the system is heading in the "wrong direction." The government aims to create a more rigorous system for claiming cash benefits.

Fundamental fairness in the welfare system

Mr. Hunt asserts that fairness is a fundamental aspect of the welfare system. He argues that those who do not actively seek employment should not receive the same benefits as individuals who are making an effort to work. The government will review the sanctions regime as part of its commitment to fairness.
