What's Happening?

Another Iceland supermarket in the UK is set to close its doors, causing disappointment among employees and customers. The store on Watford high street will be shutting down for good.

Last Day to Place Online Orders

Leaflets were distributed to locals, announcing that October 6 will be the last day to place online orders. The store is scheduled to close on October 14.

Employees Express Disappointment

Staff members of the Watford store expressed their disappointment regarding the closing. One employee told the Watford Observer that although they are disappointed, they are even more disheartened for the customers, as rumors of the store closing had been circulating for the past couple of years.

Company Statement

In response to the closing, Iceland Foods released a statement explaining that store closures are a normal part of their retail strategy. They mentioned that their retail estate has expanded by nearly 200 stores in the last decade and that they typically open more than 20 new stores each year. However, they also acknowledge that they constantly assess the retail experience and make a small number of store closures as shopping patterns change and lease agreements expire.

Previous Store Closures

This is not the first Iceland store to close this year. The supermarket chain closed its shops in Llanelli on September 12 and is set to close stores in Birkenhead and Crewe on September 16. Other closures earlier this year include locations in Bromsgrove, Basingstoke, Rhyl, Newport (Isle of Wight), Bedminster (Bristol), Bangor, Newport (Wales), Berwick, Hexham, Flint (Wales), Beccles (Suffolk), and Swansea.

More Closures in the High Street

In addition to Iceland store closures, the high street has seen a series of shutdowns. The Farmfoods store in Market Street, Huddersfield, is set to close on September 24, and Central Co-op is closing one of its branches in Atherstone, Coventry this month. However, customers can take solace in the fact that supermarket giant Tesco will be taking over the Atherstone branch.

Wetherspoons Pub Closures

Not only are supermarkets experiencing closures, but the Wetherspoons pub chain is also shutting down some of its pubs.
