Local residents in Mansfield, Nottingham are expressing their concerns over council-backed plans to build nearly 100 new houses in their neighborhood. Homeowners fear that the influx of newbuilds will turn their street into a nightmare reminiscent of "Piccadilly Circus."
Plans for a new road
In an effort to ease the potential disruptions caused by the new development, Nottinghamshire County Council has requested the developer, Permission Homes, to create a new road. If approved, Albion Street and Mount Street could be joined, creating a through-road to help manage traffic from the 84 newbuilds.
Frustration and parking issues
Frustrated homeowners highlight the existing parking issues in the area. Kallum Holness recounted a recent experience where they were unable to find a parking spot after returning from holiday, resulting in receiving a parking ticket. Another long-time resident expressed concerns about the area becoming even more crowded, making it nearly impossible to find parking, especially when family and visitors come over.
Pressure on local infrastructure
The influx of additional traffic from the newbuilds is a significant worry for locals. Sue Gregory, a resident of Albion Street for 23 years, suggested implementing a parking scheme and being willing to pay for parking rights outside her home. Martin Quibell emphasized that if no permit scheme is put in place, the increased traffic passing through would pose even more problems in an already busy area.
Developer's perspective
According to a spokesperson for Persimmon Homes, the new access road would not only benefit the new residents but also provide existing residents with an alternative route into and out of Mansfield. By improving connectivity, they aim to alleviate some of the current traffic issues.
Local councilor's concerns
Councillor Ben Brown of Mansfield District Council took to social media to express his perspective. While he doesn't object to new homes being built, he does believe that the new access road will exacerbate traffic and parking issues, turning the affected streets into a chaotic scene comparable to Piccadilly Circus.
