Price Hike Sparks Outrage

Pot Noodle fans are not happy as prices for the iconic snack have almost doubled in just one year. The budget-friendly dehydrated snacks have risen by up to 93 per cent, which is more than five times the food inflation rate.

Prices Nearly Double

A comparison site called Trolley found that the overall increase for all flavor varieties in each store was 34 per cent. This means that six varieties, including Chicken & Mushroom, are now £1.35 in Sainsbury’s, after being just 70p in a promotional deal last August. Seven flavors at Asda are up 60 per cent, while Tesco has hiked 11 flavors by half.

Unilever Under Fire

Pot Noodle manufacturer Unilever has been accused of unfairly increasing prices for other products as well, such as Marmite, Dove soap, and Ben & Jerry’s. Despite consumers being squeezed by the cost of living crisis, Unilever reported rising revenues in July. The company saw average price rises of 9.4 per cent, boosting its income with increased operating profits of £4.5 billion, even though sales fell 0.2 per cent.

Retailers Take the Blame

Unilever insisted that the price of Pot Noodles "is at the sole discretion of retailers". Sainsbury’s responded by saying that it is committed to offering value and sells instant noodles from as low as 25p.

Overall, shoppers are frustrated with the steep increase in Pot Noodle prices, especially as the food inflation rate is only 17.4 per cent. Fans of the popular snack will have to decide whether they're willing to shell out the extra cash or look for cheaper alternatives.
