Testing the Festive Flavors

With Christmas just around the corner, we all want to save money without compromising on the traditional treats. To find out if it's possible to get all the warming festive flavors at a bargain price, I tested pre-made mulled wines from supermarket own-brands. Each one was scored out of ten for taste and value, taking into account the price per 100ml and alcohol content. Here's how they stacked up:

Tesco Vineyards Mulled Wine

Price: £3 for 75cl | 40p per 100ml | 5% ABV

Tesco's mulled wine tasted more like spiced grape juice or Vimto than wine. It lacked depth and the spice flavors felt synthetic. However, with a low alcohol content and a price of only 40p per 100ml, it's one of the cheaper options.

Taste: 6/10

Value: 6/10

Total: 12/20

Asda Mulled Wine

Price: £3 for 75cl | 40p per 100ml | 5.5% ABV

Asda's mulled wine had a nice flavor and tasted authentically of red wine. Although it was the same price as Tesco's, it contained slightly more alcohol, suggesting it may be made with more wine.

Taste: 7/10

Value: 7/10

Total: 14/20

Morrisons Winter Warmer Mulled Wine

Price: £3 for 75cl | 40p per 100ml | ABV of 5%

Morrisons was the winner in terms of taste. It had warming flavors of fruit and cloves, giving it a truly Christmassy feel. Despite being the same price as Tesco and Asda, it felt like a higher quality product.

Taste: 8/10

Value: 7/10

Total: 15/20

Sainsbury's Mull It Over Mulled Wine

Price: £3.25 for 75cl | 47p per 100ml | 5% ABV

Sainsbury's mulled wine tasted thin and resembled blackcurrant squash with added Christmas spices. Unfortunately, it was one of the most expensive options, which was disappointing.

Taste: 5/10

Value: 6/10

Total: 11/20

Aldi Gluhwein

Price: £5.99 for 1litre | 60p per 100ml | ABV of 8%

Aldi's Gluhwein tasted overwhelmingly of cheap wine and lacked any noticeable spice flavor. Despite having a higher alcohol content, the high price tag of 60p per 100ml didn't seem justified.

Taste: 4/10

Value: 4/10

Total: 8/20

Lidl Christkindl Gluhwein

Price: £5.99 for 1litre | 60p per 100ml | ABV of 8.7%

Lidl's Gluhwein had a Christmas spice flavor, but it felt artificial and had an antiseptic taste, similar to cough medicine. Despite being the strongest mulled wine we tested, it was not worth buying for 60p per 100ml.

Taste: 5/10

Value: 5/10

Total: 10/20

Conclusion

In conclusion, Morrisons' Winter Warmer Mulled Wine offers the best combination of taste and value. With its Christmassy flavors and affordable price, it's the perfect choice for the festive season. So, if you're looking to enjoy the traditional mulled wine experience without breaking the bank, head to Morrisons for your Christmas shopping.
