A UK supermarket chain is taking innovative steps to combat shoplifting by using dummy boxes of popular products, including Ferrero Rocher chocolates. Co-op stores have introduced empty display packs of Ferrero Rocher, Lindt, and Thorntons chocolates, as well as coffee and dishwasher tablets, to deter thieves. In order to obtain the real product, customers must exchange the empty box for the genuine item at the checkout.
Fighting Back Against Bulk Shoplifting
This move comes in response to a rise in bulk shoplifting where thieves quickly steal expensive items by placing them into bags, suitcases, or even wheelie bins. In many cases, these thieves become violent when confronted by staff members who try to stop them from leaving the store.
Co-op has experienced a significant increase in crime, shoplifting, and anti-social behavior this year. In fact, during the six months leading up to June, the supermarket chain reported an average of nearly 1,000 incidents per day.
Director Kate Graham acknowledges that this is a challenge faced by all retailers, and the introduction of dummy packaging is just one of many necessary security measures being implemented.
Targeting High-Risk Stores
The dummy packaging will be predominantly used in higher-risk stores. Co-op is also taking other steps to improve security, such as providing bodycams for staff members and utilizing GPS-tracked security cases for the most expensive items.
