According to a recent survey, nearly 20% of pub-goers now prioritize a pub's "green credentials" when deciding where to enjoy a drink or a meal. Factors taken into account include food waste levels and recycling rates.

Overwhelmed and Confused

Despite growing efforts to better understand sustainability, 30% of respondents admitted feeling overwhelmed and confused due to conflicting advice on what practices are truly sustainable.

Preference for Sustainable Businesses

Nearly half of those surveyed (49%) said they would be more inclined to buy goods or services from a business that prioritizes sustainability. Additionally, 38% of respondents were willing to pay extra for more sustainable options.

Unaware of Environmental Impact

Surprisingly, a majority of respondents (53%) were unaware of the environmental impact that visiting a pub, bar, or restaurant could have. Furthermore, they admitted to lacking knowledge on how to improve their environmental footprint in these settings.

Green Pub Guide: Promoting Sustainability

The research was commissioned by this year's Green Pub Guide, powered by SmartDispense, which aims to showcase pubs committed to reducing their carbon footprint, minimizing food waste, and increasing recycling rates.

Practical Steps towards Sustainability

When asked about practical ways to be more sustainable, respondents mentioned avoiding single-use plastics, supporting local events, and walking instead of driving to venues.

Extendable Attitudes

The survey findings also revealed that attitudes towards sustainable businesses extend beyond pubs, bars, and restaurants. One-third of respondents expressed a desire to incorporate more eco-friendly practices into their daily lives, although they often struggle to implement them.

Encouraging Support for Green Pubs

Chelsey Wroe, head of sustainability at HEINEKEN UK, emphasized the importance of supporting green pubs and their efforts. Wroe also highlighted the need to bridge the gap between people's desire to protect the planet and their confidence in implementing sustainable practices.

She stated, "Every person – and every pub – is at a different stage in their environmental journey. The fact that so many people prioritize sustainability is a massive leap forward, and we hope the Green Pub Guide can help support this shift in attitudes."
