Beloved Discount Chain Makes a Comeback
Wilko, the discount chain that collapsed earlier this year, is set to make a return to the UK high street. The Wilko name and intellectual property were purchased by rival discounter The Range, and now CDS Superstores, which trades as The Range and Wilko, has confirmed that it will be relaunching the chain. Five stores are expected to open before Christmas, with more to follow in the coming months.
Return to the High Street
The relaunch of Wilko will see stores opening in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The first two locations to be announced are in Plymouth and Exeter, set to open in early December. Further stores in the South-East and North will be announced soon. CDS Superstores plans to roll out more shops in January and aims to have a strong presence on high streets once again.
Encouraging Demand for Wilko
According to Alex Simpkin, CEO of CDS Superstores, there is a huge love for Wilko and a strong demand for its own-brand products. The decision to reintroduce the chain was made in response to the public reaction to the loss of Wilko stores. The company also plans to prioritize former Wilko employees in the recruitment process for the new stores.
Wide Range of Value Products
The new Wilko stores will offer a variety of value items, including cleaning and household products, decorating and DIY supplies, garden and outdoor essentials, homeware, pet supplies, storage solutions, and seasonal items. Customers will also have the option to self-serve the full range of products available on wilko.com for home delivery using in-store terminals.
Opportunities for Landlords
CDS Superstores is reaching out to landlords across the UK, inviting them to start "productive conversations" if they are interested in turning their sites into Wilko stores. The company is considering a combination of former shops and new locations for the expansion of the chain.
Wilko Products Already Available at The Range
As a precursor to the relaunch of Wilko stores, The Range has already opened concessions in its 210 shops, selling a range of popular Wilko products. This move allows customers to access Wilko products while they wait for the reopening of dedicated Wilko stores.
