The average salary of a migrant entering the UK with a visa has dropped significantly in just two years, according to a shocking report. Between 2021 and 2023, the average salary fell from £42,884 to £32,946, raising concerns about the impact of new visa rules.

Social care workers exempt from salary threshold

Despite recent changes raising the salary threshold for new arrivals to £38,750, social care workers are exempt from this requirement. This exemption has led to a surge in visas awarded to professionals in the "Caring professional Services" sector, skewing the salary rules.

Influx of skilled worker visas

According to the Centre for Migration Studies, the number of skilled worker visas awarded to migrants has significantly increased over the past two years. In 2023 alone, 228,799 skilled worker visas were handed out, up from 79,995 in 2021. The most common professions among visa holders were 'nursing and midwifery' and 'IT and Telecomm', with varying salary averages.

Critics slam new immigration system

Despite government claims that the salary changes will reduce net migration by 300,000, critics argue that the new visa system is a political gimmick. Robert Bates, Research Director at the Centre for Migration Control, stated that the system is geared towards low-skilled migration and fails to address the core issues of border control.
