DOWNING Street declared British submarines were the “best in the world” after a gobby Aussie politician warned against buying them.

Rishi Sunak will this month sign a multibillion deal to provide a fleet of conventionally-armed nuke-powered subs to the Australian Navy.

Downing Street declared British submarines were the “best in the world”

It will form part of the AUKUS pact with the Australians and the Americans and generate billions for the British defence industry.

But Canberra’s leader of the opposition Peter Dutton said British boats would be plagued by problems and their government should instead but the “proven” US Virginia-class sub.

The loudmouthed antipodean insisted he had “greatest of respect for the Brits” but our new generation of SSN(R) subs risked breakdowns and delays.

However Australia’s Defence Minister Peter Conroy said Dutton was “either being mischievous or he’s not privy to the latest information.”

He told reporters: “I’ve just come back from Barrow in the United Kingdom where I’ve got a full briefing on what the United Kingdom is doing.

“I stay in regular contact with the US Navy, and we’ll make announcements very shortly about the optimal path forward on our nuclear propelled submarines.”

And Mr Sunak’s spokesman said the PM “absolutely” rejects the claims, and “of course” British boats were the best in the world.
