Comedian Eddie Izzard has been unsuccessful in her latest attempt to become a Labour candidate for the upcoming general election.

The 61-year-old, who now goes by the name Suzy and identifies as a gender-fluid trans woman, lost out to musician Tom Gray for the Brighton Pavilion nomination. This is the second time Eddie's political aspirations have been turned down, after she was not selected as Labour's candidate for Sheffield Central last December.

Tom Gray, 46, a member of the Mercury Prize-winning rock band Gomez, expressed his gratitude for the support he received during the campaign. He said, "Delighted and humbled to be selected," and thanked Eddie, Lucy, and Birgit for their solidarity and integrity.

Last week, Eddie described representing Brighton as the most profound experience of her life. She also emphasized that she has been a voice for trans people for four decades, having adopted female pronouns in 2020. Eddie has previously stated that she will continue her pursuit of becoming an MP.

The current MP for Brighton Pavilion is Caroline Lucas, the former leader of the Green Party. Lucas will be stepping down at the next general election after holding the coastal seat since 2010. Labour aims to regain control of the constituency following their success in the local elections in May.
