Senior Tories have found themselves embroiled in a heated debate over whether to allow Nigel Farage to rejoin the party. Moderate Tory Robert Buckland and right-wing Mark Francois have expressed opposing views on the matter.

Farage's History with the Party

Nigel Farage was previously a member of the Tory party until the early 1990s. He then went on to establish the UK Independence Party (UKIP). However, since his appearance on I'm A Celebrity, Farage has hinted at the possibility of returning to the Tory fold.

Clashing Opinions

Tory MP Mark Francois spoke highly of Farage, referring to him as a "rock star politician" and emphasizing the party's broad church nature. On the other hand, ex-Cabinet Minister Robert Buckland expressed doubts about the compatibility of Farage's presence in the party, stating, "Nigel Farage and me in the same party? Can't see that really working."

Farage's Recent Controversies

Last week, Farage accused Coutts, a prestigious bank, of closing his account due to political discrimination. However, an independent review conducted by law firm Travers Smith found no evidence to support this claim. The review examined 84 account closures over a two-year period and found no discrimination.

In response, Farage criticized the review as a "work of fiction" and insisted that it did not accurately reflect the reasons behind the closure of his account. He called on NatWest, the owner of Coutts, to review their procedures for closing accounts.

Lessons to Be Learned

Coutts chief Mohammad Syed acknowledged that there are lessons to be learned from this incident. NatWest chief Alison Rose resigned in July after discussing Farage's account with a BBC journalist.

The debate surrounding Nigel Farage's potential return to the Tory party continues, highlighting the divisions within the party and the challenges of navigating political alliances in today's ever-evolving landscape.
