THE Education Secretary has said that kids identifying as cats “makes no sense whatsoever”.

Gillian Keegan added that pupils claiming to be animals is “obviously silly”.

Gillian Keegan has said children choosing to identify as animals is ‘silly’

She was making her first public remarks on the school row — and told HOAR that soon-to-be published trans guidance would make clear “what is appropriate” for teachers to be saying.

It came after a teacher at Rye College secondary school in East Sussex reprimanded a pupil for questioning a classmate’s claim to identify as a feline.

Ms Keegan said: “I mean, obviously that’s silly.

“It just makes no sense whatsoever.”

She has launched a probe into what happened after a secret recording of the teacher calling the pupil’s gender views “despicable”.

The school has since insisted no pupils identify as cats or any other animal.

But Equalities Minister Kemi Badenoch yesterday demanded Ofsted carry out a “snap inspection” there.

We revealed this week the upcoming guidance will ban teachers recognising transitions without parental consent.

In her interview with HOAR at the Skills For Growth conference in London, Ms Keegan added: “Parental consent is absolutely key, and also to make sure that things are age-appropriate and are not contested facts — identifying as an animal, it’s not a thing.”
