A £53billion raid over two decades is needed for the PM to hit 2030 target to double hydrogen power.

Brits face a hike in energy bills because of Sunak’s eco plan, experts warn

It would see households shoulder £3.5billion in planned taxes to pay for increased production, according to analysis by the Onward think tank.

Critics say this would “unfairly” saddle Brits with more levies on top of the green taxes they already pay.

And polling shows 43 per cent of voters do not want the levy.

Jack Richardson, Head of Energy and Climate at Onward said: “The Government is walking into a trap with the hydrogen levy.

“It would be a mistake that risks stalling the development of a British hydrogen economy.

“It would also be unfair to ask households that won’t benefit from hydrogen directly to pay for it.

“The Government should think again.

And the Treasury should get off the fence and back the role hydrogen can play in the economy.”
