Former Top Civil Servant Takes New Role

Jade Glenister, a former top civil servant who was responsible for inspecting immigration detention centres, has joined the left-leaning human rights charity Detention Action. During her time with HM Inspectorate of Prisons, Glenister wrote a book on the best practices for detaining illegal immigrants.

Opposition to Government's Rwanda Policy

Now serving as the deputy director of Detention Action, Glenister is actively opposing the government's Rwanda policy. This move has raised concerns among some politicians about the alignment of civil servants' actions with their responsibilities and the ability of politicians to deliver on their elected mandate.

Concerns Raised by Conservative MP

Conservative MP Marco Longhi expressed concern over civil servants transitioning into roles that oppose government policies. He called for a review into how the integrity of governance and public trust can be maintained, and how politicians can more easily remove failing or obstructive civil servants.

Expert Insight on Immigration Policies

Alp Mehmet, Chairman of Migration Watch UK, commented that Glenister's previous experience in drafting the rules for detaining and removing illegal immigrants and immigration offenders positions her well to critique the government's immigration policies. He suggested that she may be aware of loopholes in the system.
