Surge in Non-EU Migrant Workers in UK Jobs Market

Last year, three out of five new UK jobs were taken by non-EU migrants, surpassing the number of jobs filled by Brits, according to government data. A staggering 420,066 new UK jobs were occupied by migrants from countries outside the EU, such as India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Nigeria.

UK Jobs Market Relies on Overseas Workers

The latest figures from the Office for National Statistics reveal that the number of non-EU workers on the UK payroll has increased by a third in just two years. In December 2020, there were 1,921,098 non-EU workers in the UK, compared to 2,556,741 in December 2022, marking a 33.08% rise.

London Sees Significant Increase in Non-EU Workers

London has witnessed a significant surge in non-EU workers, with a record 934,046 registered in the city in December 2022, an increase of 118,565 from the previous year.

Regional Rise in Non-EU Workers

Various regions across the UK have experienced a substantial annual increase in non-EU workers. In the North East, the number of non-EU employees rose by 30% from 37,131 to 48,431. The West Midlands saw a 22% increase from 168,820 to 206,939, while Yorkshire and The Humber saw a rise of 24% from 105,466 to 130,928.

Key Industries Employing Non-EU Migrants

The NHS, care homes, and seasonal farm work are among the sectors employing a large number of non-EU migrants. These workers play a crucial role in supporting these industries.

Decline in Workers from EU Countries

While overall migration is on the rise, the number of workers coming to the UK from EU countries has been steadily declining.
