Paula Vennells Loses Honour Amid Postmaster Scandal

The former Post Office boss, Paula Vennells, has been formally stripped of her CBE by the King after facing backlash for her role in the Horizon postmaster scandal.

Revoked for Bringing Honours System into Disrepute

The Cabinet Office revealed that Vennells' CBE was revoked by the Sovereign for "bringing the honours system into disrepute." She appeared on a list of 14 people who have had their honours revoked since August 2023.

Public Outcry and ITV Drama

Vennells faced public backlash after an ITV drama highlighted the wrongful prosecution of postmasters due to faulty Horizon accounting software during her tenure at the Post Office.

Pressure to Relinquish CBE

Following a petition with over 1.2 million signatures and pressure from Downing Street, Vennells announced in January that she would give back her CBE.

New Laws to Quash Convictions

Ministers are working on urgent legislation to overturn Post Office convictions and compensate victims of the scandal, even if it means some guilty individuals may go free. The aim is for the law to take effect by the end of July.
