French Officials Criticized for Failing to Stop Small Boat Crossings

French officials are facing criticism for their inability to stop small boat crossings in the English Channel. The latest measure, described as a "pathetic dam that wouldn't stop a duck," has drawn anger from Tory MPs and others who accuse the French of not being interested in tackling smuggling gangs. This comes following the tragic deaths of six migrants in the Channel on Saturday.

£500 Million with Zero Accountability

Tory MPs are expressing outrage at the French officials, who have received half a billion pounds from British taxpayers for assistance in this matter. One ex-Cabinet Minister called it "madness" and accused the French of having no accountability for the funds received.

Ineffective Measures

Concerns have been raised about the recent efforts made by French authorities to address the issue. Local officials in Calais erected a row of buoys across a river commonly used by traffickers to transport migrants to the beaches. However, critics argue that this makeshift barrier is ineffective and makes a mockery of the situation. One Tory MP stated, "Defenses such as this wouldn't stop a duck."

Fresh Scrutiny on Rishi Sunak's Deal

The criticism has also extended to the UK's deal with Emmanuel Macron to reduce boat crossings. It has been revealed that French ships were escorting the dinghies that sank on Saturday, raising questions about the effectiveness of the agreement. Despite claims by Prime Minister Boris Johnson that more boats are being intercepted, government figures admit that most intercepted migrants simply try again later.

Increasing Number of Crossings

The number of small boat migrants has been steadily increasing, with over 100,000 crossings reported last week. On one day alone, 750 migrants landed, marking the highest daily total this year. This underscores the urgency for stronger enforcement measures to prevent further tragic deaths in the English Channel.
