The UK government is taking action to protect the beloved full English breakfast as the country faces a crisis in the production of eggs and sausages. Cabinet Minister Therese Coffey is ordering urgent government measures to ensure that British-grown ingredients remain available.

Egg and Sausage Shortages

Supermarkets experienced a significant egg shortage earlier this year due to bird flu and rising costs affecting farmers. Additionally, British pig farmers warned of a potential industry collapse due to high feed prices and labor shortages.

A Westminster insider explained, "This is about ensuring good quality British eggs and pork."

Government Review

The government will launch a review into unfair prices in the egg sector to find a solution that provides fair compensation to British farmers without increasing supermarket prices. This review follows a recent government assessment of the pig farming industry, which committed to tightening regulations to benefit pig farmers.

Whitehall insiders have stated that these measures will increase the availability of British bacon and sausages in supermarkets and ensure they end up on consumers' plates.

Improving Food Security

Chancellor Rishi Sunak aims to enhance Britain's food security by promoting domestic food production. This goal comes in response to the challenges faced by the country's food supply chains during the Covid lockdowns and the conflict in Ukraine.
