Female-only toilets will be guaranteed in new buildings under government plans, amid concerns over privacy and safety in gender-neutral facilities.

Ensuring Privacy and Dignity

Ministers are taking action to protect women-only toilets, recognizing the importance of privacy and dignity for everybody when using public facilities. Women's Minister Kemi Badenoch stated: "It is important that everybody has privacy and dignity when using public facilities."

Separate Facilities Required

All new public and private buildings, including offices, will be required to offer separate male and female toilets, or a self-contained private one. These changes will be made through building regulations and will not affect private homes.

Concerns over Gender Neutral Facilities

There have been concerns over the privacy and safety of women and the elderly in gender-neutral facilities. Publicly accessible toilets have increasingly been converted into fashionable gender-neutral loos. However, many women have raised concerns about the loss of same-sex spaces and feeling uncomfortable sharing cubicles and hand-washing facilities with men.

Protecting Women's Rights

New regulations will guarantee appropriate facilities for women, either through a single-sex space or a private toilet. Women's Minister Kemi Badenoch emphasized, "These proposals will ensure every new building in England is required to provide separate male and female or unisex facilities, protecting the dignity, privacy, and safety of all."

Consultation Period

A short consultation on these plans will open tomorrow to gather feedback from the public and stakeholders.
