Chancellor Jeremy Hunt has dismissed the suggestion made by Tory chief Lee Anderson to send asylum seekers to the Orkney Islands as an alternative to the Rwanda plan. Anderson, the Tory Party deputy chairman, had proposed using a "nice Scottish island" in the Orkneys to process migrants. However, Hunt referred to Anderson's comments as "colourful language" and stated that the government will do whatever it takes to stop the boats.

Anderson's Proposal Met with Skepticism

Anderson made the proposal on his GB News show, revealing that he had previously discussed using the Falkland Islands with former Prime Minister Boris Johnson. When asked about Anderson's suggestion, Hunt brushed it off and emphasized the government's commitment to preventing illegal immigration. Commons Leader Penny Mordaunt also rejected the idea, stating that neither the Falkland Islands nor the Orkney Islands would be considered as alternatives to Rwanda.

Ruling Against Sending Asylum Seekers to Rwanda

Last week, the Supreme Court ruled that the current plan to send asylum seekers to Rwanda is unlawful. This has sparked a debate about alternative solutions and locations for processing migrants. Anderson argued that a Scottish island with suitable accommodation could be a safe haven for those fleeing war or persecution.

MP Criticizes Anderson's Remarks

Orkney and Shetland MP Alistair Carmichael, who is also the Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Home Affairs, criticized Anderson's remarks, stating that they showed "disdain" towards his constituents. The proposal to use the Orkney Islands as a processing location was met with skepticism due to concerns about the reliability of SNP ferry services.
