Veterans minister calls for unity within the Conservative Party

Johnny Mercer, the Veterans minister, has issued a rallying cry to his fellow Tory MPs, urging them to get behind Chancellor Rishi Sunak or risk losing the upcoming election to the Labour Party. Mercer stressed the importance of party cohesion, stating that the country's future is at stake. His call comes after a week of intense infighting over the Prime Minister's emergency legislation regarding illegal migration to Rwanda.

Facing opposition from right-wing factions

Sunak has successfully cleared the first hurdle for his bill in the House of Commons, but he now faces potential mutiny in the new year from right-wing factions known as the "five families" and the left-leaning One Nation group. However, Mercer emphasized that the public wants to see discipline, dedication, and duty from the party. He believes that the Prime Minister embodies these qualities and it is crucial for the party to support him both in the Cabinet and across the party.

Scrutinizing the Labour Party

According to Mercer, it is essential to closely examine the Labour Party's policies, as the more they are scrutinized, the worse they appear. He stated that the country's future is at stake and that it is the duty of the Conservative Party to step up and support the Prime Minister. Mercer also highlighted the dire state of the veterans' offer in the Labour Party, claiming that there are no plans in place.

Hotline for homeless veterans

Johnny Mercer recently launched a hotline for homeless veterans, as part of the Op Fortitude scheme. The initiative, which aims to tackle homelessness within the veteran community, has already referred 400 individuals since its launch in July. Mercer expressed his commitment to ensuring that no veterans sleep rough this Christmas and stated that the provision for homeless veterans is not saturated.

Changing lives through politics

While acknowledging the toll that politics can take, Mercer described his work as a "huge privilege." He explained that meeting individuals impacted by his efforts reminds him of why he is involved in politics and why he perseveres through the challenges. Mercer believes that by changing the lives of those in need, he is making a meaningful difference.
