Former Chancellor Will Not Stand for Re-election

Kwasi Kwarteng, the former Chancellor, has announced that he will not stand for re-election at the next general election. This comes after he was sacked by Liz Truss following a disastrous mini budget.

Commitment to Serve Constituents Until End of Parliament

In a statement, Kwarteng stated that he will continue to serve the residents of his Spelthorne constituency until the end of the current parliament. He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve since 2010.

Shortest-Serving Chancellor in History

Kwarteng gained attention when he was fired as Chancellor after just 38 days in the role. He holds the record for being the second shortest-serving Chancellor, with Iain Macleod's 30-day stint in 1970 being the only one shorter.

Regret Over Mini-Budget

The former Chancellor has admitted that he regrets the September 2022 mini budget, which resulted in skyrocketing mortgages and a plummeting pound. He claims that he warned former PM Truss to slow down their economic plans, but his advice was ignored.

Launching of "Popcon" Splinter Group

Liz Truss is set to launch a new Tory splinter group called "Popcon", which stands for "Popular Conservatism". This faction of MPs, supported by senior Tories such as Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg and Deputy Tory Chairman Lee Anderson, will advocate for tax cuts and a smaller state.
