The leader of Labour's largest council, which has recently declared bankruptcy and halted most spending, is facing criticism for celebrating his 50th birthday in New York.

Cotton's Birthday Jaunt Causes Controversy

John Cotton, chosen for the leadership role by Labour chief Sir Keir Starmer, began his trip while Birmingham announced its inability to balance its books.

Cotton faced backlash as he conducted an interview via video link from the Big Apple, with the news that a Section 114 notice had been filed, signifying the city's inability to meet its financial obligations.

All non-essential spending will come to a halt immediately, except for essential services and support for vulnerable individuals.

Council Tax Increase Looming

Furthermore, there are concerns that residents may face a ten percent increase in council tax.

A source stated, "Cotton would have been aware that bankruptcy was imminent, but he still chose to fly off on his birthday trip."

Meirion Jenkins, shadow council member for finance, expressed, "If you're the leader of Europe's largest metropolitan authority and the city goes bankrupt, you must return and take charge. It's hard to believe he knew nothing until the announcement by the finance minister."

Cotton's Appointment Amidst Dysfunction

Mr. Cotton was selected by Labour's NEC to lead the council in May after a report labeled the party group as "dysfunctional".

The council now grapples with an equal pay liability of over £1 billion and an £87 million budget deficit for this year.

Cotton Remains Committed to Essential Services

In a video link statement, Mr. Cotton assured that the council will continue to provide essential services.

Sunak Mocks Sir Keir in Parliament

Rishi Sunak taunted Sir Keir about the Birmingham crisis during a session in Parliament yesterday.

The Prime Minister asserted, "Labour in Birmingham is failing hardworking people, losing control of taxpayers' money, and driving their finances into the ground. They've bankrupted Birmingham, but we cannot let them bankrupt Britain."
