Labour Figures Predict EU's Response to Election Win

Top figures in the Labour Party have claimed that the European Union (EU) would "breathe a sigh of relief" if they were elected. They have vowed to unpick the Brexit deal if Sir Keir Starmer becomes Prime Minister.

Promises of a Cosier Relationship with the EU

London mayor Sadiq Khan has stated that rejoining the EU's customs union should be "on the table" when the Brexit deal is up for renegotiation. Speaking at the Fabian Society conference in London, Khan said, "David Lammy (Shadow Foreign Secretary) is on to something saying we should have a closer relationship." Lammy himself has emphasized that the EU is their top priority because it is their "backyard."

Anticipating the EU's Reaction

Hilary Benn, a frontbencher for the Labour Party, has confidently stated that the EU would greet a Labour government with a "big, audible sigh of relief." He suggests that it would be logical to pursue a closer relationship with the EU in light of this. However, Conservative MP Jacob Rees-Mogg has criticized Benn's stance, calling him the "high priest of Remainers" and accusing him of wanting to make the UK a "client state" of the European empire.
