Anas Sarwar’s father, former Labour MP Mohammad Sarwar, is facing criticism for a tweet that referred to 9/11 as a "hoax".

The tweet, shared on Mr. Sarwar's X account, included a controversial video claiming that the 2001 terror attacks on the Twin Towers and the Pentagon were a "huge deception". The video also alleged that the US Government orchestrated the attacks "to extend imperial control at home and abroad".

Mohammad Sarwar, who served as a Glasgow MP from 1997 to 2010 before becoming the Governor of Punjab in Pakistan, has faced backlash for the tweet.

Anas Sarwar, the current Scottish Labour leader, has previously referred to his father as "my hero".

The Scottish Conservatives criticized the tweet, stating that it was "appalling and irresponsible" for Mr. Sarwar’s X account, which has 1.9 million followers, to give credibility to this offensive conspiracy theory.

In response, Mohammad Sarwar issued a statement condemning the 9/11 terrorist attack and expressing sympathy for the victims. He apologized for the inappropriate tweet and stated that his social media protocols are being reviewed and strengthened.

A spokesman noted that it is particularly astonishing that the tweet was posted by someone who was a Labour MP under Tony Blair at the time of 9/11.

The tweet was deleted after Labour was made aware of it. The party emphasized that the tweet does not reflect Anas Sarwar's or Scottish Labour's views.
