Lord Peter Goldsmith's Legal Work for Azerbaijan Raises Concerns

A Labour peer leading efforts to frustrate the Rwanda plan on safety grounds has declared earnings of more than £380,000 from a country accused of torturing people. Lord Peter Goldsmith was paid the massive sum for legal work done for the Government of Azerbaijan – which has a poor human rights record.

Rebellion to Delay Rishi Sunak's New Treaty

Last night, Lord Goldsmith successfully spearheaded a rebellion to delay Rishi Sunak's new treaty with Kigali that underpins the flagship migration scheme. His motion stated that the deal should not be signed without certain "protections" for asylum seekers.

Conflict of Interest?

Lord Goldsmith's recent work for Azerbaijan, revealed by TalkTV, risks dragging him into a hypocrisy row. His Lords register of interests shows £381,244 from the Azerbaijan Government last year through legal firm Debevoise and Plimpton LLP, where he is a co-managing partner.

Poor Human Rights Record in Azerbaijan

According to Human Rights Watch, authorities in Azerbaijan imprison political opponents on bogus charges. Their 2022 report also highlighted "systemic torture and ill treatment in custody and restrictions on media freedoms."

Downing Street Insists Rwanda Plan on Track

Downing Street has insisted that the Rwanda plan will not be thrown off track by last night's vote on Lord Goldsmith's motion. The non-binding motion, which received 214 votes in favor and 171 against, will not impact the timelines for the progress of the Bill or the springtime launch of the flights.

Future Opposition in the House of Lords

However, the vote is seen as a statement of intent that the House of Lords will try to scupper the PM's Bill when it comes to the upper House next week.

Foreign Secretary Urges Passage of the Bill

Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron has expressed his support for the Rwanda plan, stating that it is not acceptable to have people traveling from a perfectly safe country, such as France, to another safe country, such as Britain, and be able to stay. He urged the House of Lords to pass the Bill.

HOAR has contacted Lord Goldsmith for comment.
