Embarrassing Oversight

Labour's by-election embarrassment in Rochdale shows no signs of slowing down as party pamphlets urging residents to support their rejected candidate, Azhar Ali, continue to be delivered to doorsteps. The four-page leaflet, printed before the controversy, features a strong endorsement from senior party figure Andy Burnham, who promises that Ali will be a "strong voice" for the region.

Controversial Candidate

Azhar Ali, the candidate who was later dropped by Labour, faced criticism for his comments suggesting that Israel allowed the October 7 massacre. Despite the party withdrawing its support, the leaflet prominently displays several images of Ali, wearing the traditional red rosette, urging locals to "vote Labour" in the upcoming by-election.

Support from Prominent Figures

Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, appears on the leaflet alongside Ali, vouching for his candidacy and declaring him a "powerful champion" for the town. Additionally, the leaflet features endorsements from five local residents who support Ali's plans to improve the town center and the nearby hospital.

Party's Response

Labour's shadow Defence secretary, John Healey, acknowledged that not everyone in the party is perfect but emphasized that the party should be judged based on how it addresses complaints and allegations. Party leader Keir Starmer, who has taken decisive action to distance the party from Ali, has pledged to root out antisemitism within Labour.

Progress and Lessons

Mike Katz, chairman of the Jewish Labour Movement, acknowledged the progress made by the party leadership in tackling antisemitism but described the recent events as not being the party's "finest hour." Katz emphasized that the party has learned valuable lessons and is moving in the right direction.

Sir Keir Starmer has insisted that the party has transformed since the Jeremy Corbyn era, and he has taken firm action in withdrawing support from Ali.
