In a stunning revelation at the Tory Party Conference in Manchester, Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen voices his support for Rishi Sunak's plan to scrap the Manchester leg of the controversial HS2 project. He describes the multi-billion pound initiative as a "white elephant" that could be better spent elsewhere.

Houchen: HS2 is a "White Elephant"

Mayor Ben Houchen shares his thoughts on HS2, saying, "I think HS2 is a white elephant. I think that money could be better spent on other things. A project that was supposed to cost £32bn is now costing £180bn. People I represent across the North of England as well would suggest that that could probably be better spent on other priorities that make a better difference to their lives."

Sunak Acknowledges Escalating Costs

Rishi Sunak, Chancellor of the Exchequer, acknowledges the enormous and escalating costs of the HS2 project. He states, "It's clear that the costs of this programme has escalated far beyond what anyone thought at the beginning."

PM to Confirm Plans for HS2

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to finally announce the government's plans for HS2 during his major conference speech. The £36bn budget earmarked for the Birmingham to Manchester leg is rumored to be redirected toward regional transport links in the Midlands and North.

Amid immense pressure from Tory MPs and members to make a decision, Rishi Sunak emphasizes the need for a careful examination of the details before deciding what's right for the country. His primary concern is being responsible with taxpayer money.

Make or Break Moment for Sunak

The PM's confirmation of HS2 plans will be a defining moment for Rishi Sunak and his prospects at the next general election. This announcement follows a week of confusion and uncertainty surrounding HS2, casting a significant shadow over the conference. The government's proposed redirection of funds to regional transport links in the Midlands and North is expected to be part of the announcement.
