Michael Gove, the Housing Secretary, is currently under investigation by Parliament's sleaze watchdog regarding his register of financial interests. The details of the probe are being kept confidential until the investigation is complete.

Failure to disclose VIP hospitality at football match

Recent reports from the Guardian revealed that Michael Gove failed to formally register VIP hospitality he received at a football match with Tory donor David Meller. Meller's firm had previously been recommended by Gove for a PPE contract during the pandemic. Both Gove and Meller attended a Queens Park Rangers match in 2021, where they were entertained.

Controversy over PPE contracts

Meller Designs, the firm associated with David Meller, was granted six PPE contracts totaling £164m when Covid-19 hit the UK. The connection between Gove's acceptance of hospitality and the awarding of contracts has raised concerns and led to the investigation by the standards watchdog.

Gove's response

In response to the investigation, a spokesperson for Michael Gove stated that he is grateful to the Guardian for highlighting the issue. Gove has acknowledged the potential omission in his register of members' financial interests regarding the complimentary tickets he received from Queens Park Rangers Football Club. He routinely declares his attendance at such events as an MP and government minister and has apologized for any oversight on his part.
