Health Officials Give Green Light to Accommodation Barge

The Bibby Stockholm, a giant barge that had been empty for two months due to the presence of deadly legionella bacteria, has been deemed safe by health officials. The Home Office confirmed that tests for the bacteria and improved fire safety protocols have been completed.

Migrants Told to Move Back Onboard

Around 38 migrants have been instructed to return to the Bibby Stockholm. However, some are reportedly refusing to do so.

New Rules Announced for Migrants

Home Secretary Suella Braverman unveiled a set of strict rules for migrants who do not want to board the barge. Firstly, they will be evicted from their taxpayer-funded hotel within 24 hours and treated as trespassers if they refuse to leave. Secondly, if they do not take up accommodations onboard the Bibby within 5 days, their accommodation support will be scrapped entirely.

Government Aims to Reduce Hotel Costs

A Home Office spokesperson stated that the government's goal is to reduce the use of expensive hotels for accommodating migrants and instead provide more cost-effective alternatives. The phased approach will gradually increase the number of people onboard the Bibby Stockholm in Portland.

Protestors Voice Opposition

As migrants returned to the barge, they were met by around 30 protestors holding banners that read "Scrap the prison barge! Refugees welcome".

Mounting Costs of Asylum System

Last month, the bill for taxpayers' funds used for migrant hotels reached £8 million. The total cost of Britain's asylum and accommodation system has now exceeded £3 billion.
