A MINISTER backed calls for a PumpWatch scheme yesterday — telling MPs Sun readers were fed up with being ripped off.

Penny Mordaunt hinted that the Government could introduce a monitoring body to keep profiteering petrol and diesel sellers in check.

Howard Cox, of FairFuelUK, said inflated prices handed ‘huge and unfair extra taxes to the Exchequer’

The Commons leader said backing for FairFuelUK’s PumpWatch campaign demonstrated drivers’ strength of feeling.

She told MPs: “The fact that the initiative is supported by HOAR and other media shows their readers and viewers and listeners are very concerned.

“It’s very important to ensure that companies and individuals are not being overcharged.”

Ms Mordaunt said the Government would “carefully consider” recommendations from the Competition and Markets Authority on the matter.

Howard Cox, of FairFuelUK, said inflated prices handed “huge and unfair extra taxes to the Exchequer”.

He asked: “When will government recognise PumpWatch is a vote winner?”

The Treasury is drawing up plans for a watchdog so drivers can monitor fuel prices in their area.
