Manchester Leg of HS2 Could Be Scrapped, Speculation Mounts

Speculation is growing that the Crewe to Manchester leg of HS2, the high-speed rail line, may be scrapped in a bid to save money. Government ministers are considering scaling back the project, with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Chancellor Jeremy Hunt set to make a decision this week.

Leeds Line and Euston Terminal Already Axed

The line from London to Leeds has already been cancelled, as has the Euston terminal, which will now be located outside of central London. Phase One of HS2, from London to Birmingham, has already cost £23 billion, and further funds are likely required.

Budget Pressures and Unforeseen Costs

Defence Secretary Grant Shapps highlighted the need to respond to budget pressures and unforeseen costs, such as the impact of the coronavirus pandemic and the war in Ukraine. He referred to the expenses and inflation related to these events, stating that it would be "irresponsible" and "crazy" not to consider ways to save money.

Fears of a North-South Divide

Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham expressed concerns that cancelling the Crewe to Manchester leg of HS2 would treat northern voters as "second class citizens." He warned that it could further deepen the North-South divide, potentially creating a significant gap.

Labour's Mixed Messages

Last week, the Labour Party appeared to have conflicting views on HS2, with three different positions being expressed. However, Shadow Chief Secretary Darren Jones stated recently that the party would "love to see" the project completed in full.
