MPs will start dishing out Ofsted-style ratings on how well Matt Hancock is doing his job.

The powerful Commons’ Health and Social Care Committee will grade Government progress on major pledges – from “outstanding” to “inadequate”.

The new system has been set up by chair Jeremy Hunt and will focus on performance in areas such as cancer, patient safety and mental health.

The scores will be handed out by an independent expert panel chaired by one of the nation’s top docs, Professor Dame Jane Dacre.

Mr Hunt, a former Health Secretary, said: “We are piloting a new ratings system to provide an expert independent assessment of the government’s record on key pledges.

“This will mean the government is held to account by an evaluation process similar to that used across the NHS and social care system, which gives not just an absolute score but key pointers as to how to improve that score next time round.”

Ratings will follow the Ofsted scale – inadequate, requires improvement, good and outstanding.

The panel’s first piece of work will look at maternity services in England, which have been rocked by a series of scandals in recent years.

An investigation into Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust is examining nearly 1,900 complaints of poor care.

And a review found 11 babies and one mother had needlessly died at Cumbria’s Furness General Hospital between 2004 and 2013.

Dame Jane said: “Government pledges are often made and are – in my view and the view of others – not always followed up.

“So to provide some kind of follow-up of that – how things are doing, what could be improved – is likely to improve the achievement of some of the pledges that are made.”
