Nigel Farage expressed his anger yesterday over a review that found no evidence of political discrimination by Coutts bank. The independent probe was launched after Farage accused the bank of closing his account due to his political views. However, the law firm Travers Smith, commissioned to carry out the review, stated that there was no evidence to support this claim. The review examined 84 account closures over a two-year period and identified areas for improvement in the bank's communication with customers.
Accusations of Discrimination
Nigel Farage, former leader of Ukip and participant in I'm A Celebrity, has criticized the Travers Smith review as a "work of fiction." He claims that the report does not accurately reflect the true reasons for his account closure, as disclosed by the bank. While the review acknowledged deficiencies in the bank's subjective account closure procedures, Farage believes that NatWest, the owner of Coutts, needs to reassess its practices.
Improving Communication with Customers
The Travers Smith review highlighted the need for Coutts to improve how it communicates "exit decisions" to customers. Coutts chief Mohammad Syed acknowledged that there are lessons to be learned from the experiences of some customers and apologized for any shortcomings. The review's findings come after NatWest chief Alison Rose resigned in July following discussions about Farage's account with a BBC journalist.
