New Daily Record for Arrivals Rocks Rishi Sunak's Pledge

Rishi Sunak's vow to stop the boats was dealt a major blow as a new daily record for migrant arrivals was set this year. On Saturday, a staggering 872 illegal migrants arrived in 15 dinghies, surpassing the previous high of 756 on August 10. This surge brings the total number of people making the dangerous journey across the Channel to 20,973 this year, putting pressure on the government to find radical solutions.

Tory MPs Demand Radical Measures

Tory MPs are calling for radical solutions to tackle the ongoing migrant crisis. The recent influx of arrivals demonstrates the urgent need for action. With the Prime Minister's plan to deport some migrants to Rwanda put on hold due to a Supreme Court battle, ministers are determined to win it to enable flights before the next election. Some MPs are even suggesting that Rishi Sunak should be willing to withdraw from the European Court of Human Rights to ensure planes can be sent to Kigali.

PM Insists Law is a Deterrent

Despite the record-breaking number of arrivals, Rishi Sunak is adamant that his newly implemented law, which bans illegal migrants from settling, is a deterrent. He argues that there have been fewer crossings this year compared to the same time last year when 25,000 migrants had already made the journey. However, critics, including Labour's shadow home secretary, Yvette Cooper, are accusing Sunak of breaking his "small boats promise."

Progress Made in Clearing Asylum Backlog

The Home Office has reportedly made progress in clearing the asylum backlog by significantly reducing the length of interviews. Previously lasting seven hours, interviews have now been shortened to as little as 45 minutes. While the government aims to address the issue of backlogged asylum claims, the latest surge in arrivals adds greater urgency to finding effective solutions.
