POLICE chiefs are struggling to attract more black officers despite a huge recruitment drive, figures reveal.

More than half of all forces still have fewer than ten in their ranks — six years after a diversity push to make the police better reflect the wider population.

The 22 forces employ just 89 black officers — around one in every 450 officers.

Cleveland, Northumbria and Durham have a combined total of just four black officers.

Home Secretary Priti Patel will be dismayed by the figures.

Det Insp Andy George, of the National Black Police Association, said: “Until we reach out and stop being defensive over emotive issues such as stop and search, recruitment will not increase.”

Latest statistics show 14 per cent of the population is from an ethnic minority, compared with 7.6 per cent of cops.
