THE boozy student life­style has become the ­latest victim of the cost of living crisis as almost three in four undergraduates say they have cut back on drinking to save money.

Nearly half reported taking on extra debt on top of student loans to cope with rising inflation.

The Student Happiness Index by Endsleigh Insurance and the National Union of Students shows how rising prices have hit the “work hard, play hard” culture of university life.

Despite this, happiness levels are up on a year ago when Covid was disrupting higher education.

Alison Meckiffe, Chief Executive of Endsleigh Insurance, said: “Our report shows promising signs that student happiness has increased.

“But we can’t ignore the huge financial challenges many are facing.”
