Demands for Tough Action

John Woodcock, the government’s adviser on political violence, is calling for new buffer zones outside MPs' homes to prevent pro-Palestinian mobs from besieging them. This comes after a series of incidents where MPs had their family homes and offices surrounded by angry crowds.

MPs Targeted

Pro-Palestinian protesters recently surrounded Tory MP Tobias Ellwood’s family home, accusing him of being a war criminal. Another incident involved Tory whip Robert Largan encountering Gaza protesters, including individuals pretending to be hostages, outside his office.

Calls for Enhanced Public Space Protection Orders

Woodcock, also known as Lord Walney, is pushing for Enhanced Public Space Protection Orders (E-PSPOs) to give police new powers to disperse crowds from MPs' offices and homes. He is urgently working to expand these recommendations to include protection for MPs' residences.

Concerns for Safety

With the safety of MPs in mind, Woodcock emphasized the importance of deterring extreme activists from targeting their homes. He warned that such behavior could escalate and lead to the need for permanent police presence outside properties.

MPs Speak Out

Tory MP Ellwood highlighted the need for agreed-upon standards of conduct to prevent aggressive demonstrators from normalizing provocative actions that could turn violent. Meanwhile, MP Largan shared his experience with protesters, criticizing their lack of understanding and inappropriate behavior.

Protesters' Behavior

Largan expressed dismay at the protesters' actions, including dressing up as Hamas fighters and posing for photos. He emphasized the need for more effective and respectful ways of conveying messages, rather than engaging in disruptive or inappropriate behavior.
