Senior MPs Demand Action

Today, a group of 46 Tory backbenchers penned a letter to Michael Gove, urging a ban on new-build rip off charges. They are seeking a change in the law to prevent big developers from imposing unfair maintenance fees on residents.

Plight of Brits in "Fleeceholds"

Around four million Brits are currently living in "fleeceholds," where common spaces on new build estates are not under the jurisdiction of local councils. Instead, residents face hefty charges from private companies or developers for subpar maintenance services.

Call for Government Intervention

The MPs are calling on the government to take control of public spaces like roads and parks that are currently managed by private firms. They want the Leasehold and Freehold Bill to be amended to put an end to the fleecehold model and empower residents.

Watchdog's Warning

A 2023 review by the Competition and Markets Authority highlighted fleeceholds as a major concern, citing significant detriment to households. The watchdog recommended a ban on the fleecehold model and urged the government to adopt public spaces on new build estates.

Plea for Empowerment

In their letter to Mr. Gove, the backbenchers commended the government for leasehold reform but emphasized the need to address existing fleecehold estates. They also called for an end to the unfair forfeiture system, which puts residents at risk of losing their homes over minor payment disputes.
