UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will today chair a meeting in Spain with his Italian counterpart Giorgia Meloni to discuss a new pact aimed at tackling migrant-smuggling gangs. Sunak will call on European allies to help protect the continent's borders from this growing threat.

New pact and intelligence sharing

During the meeting, Prime Minister Sunak will announce a new pact to combat migrant-smuggling gangs. This will include increased intelligence sharing and the inclusion of Belgium, Bulgaria, and Serbia in the effort.

Moral obligation to act

In anticipation of the summit, Sunak emphasized the moral imperative to address the issue, stating, "With thousands of people dying at sea, propelled by people smugglers, the situation is immoral. We cannot allow criminal gangs to decide who comes to Europe's shores."

He stressed the importance of unity in facing this threat, saying, "When it comes to facing down the threat from Putin, confronting the risks and opportunities of AI, or dealing with illegal migration, there is strength in unity."

Funding for humanitarian aid

As part of the UK's commitment to addressing the humanitarian crisis caused by illegal migration, Sunak will announce new funding, including £34 million for the United Nations and charities providing shelter and warm winter clothing.

Additionally, a fourth loan worth over £400 million has been dispersed from the World Bank to ensure the government can provide winter support cash to three million households.

Artificial Intelligence discussion and support for Ukraine

In addition to the meeting on illegal migration, Sunak will hold discussions on Artificial Intelligence ahead of a global AI safety summit in the UK next month. These discussions will also touch on providing support to Ukraine, including the provision of fighter jets.
