Rishi Sunak, the UK Chancellor of the Exchequer, is at the center of controversy after making a transphobic remark while Esther Ghey, the mother of Brianna Ghey, a trans teenager who was tragically murdered, was present in parliament.

Trans Jibe Made in Parliament

Esther Ghey was in the Commons chamber to observe Prime Minister's Questions (PMQs) when Rishi Sunak made the transphobic comment. Both Sunak and Sir Keir Starmer, the leader of the Labour Party, were unaware that Ghey was present during the exchange.

The Exchange

During a back-and-forth with Sir Keir, the Prime Minister jokingly referenced the Labour leader's belief that one percent of women have a penis. He criticized Sir Keir for breaking numerous promises and ended his statement by saying, "defining a woman, although in fairness that was only 99 percent of a U-turn."

Sir Keir responded, expressing his disappointment at the timing of the comment, considering Brianna Ghey's mother was in the chamber. He emphasized that the Prime Minister should prioritize making every citizen feel safe and respected.

Calls for Apology

Multiple MPs called on the Prime Minister to apologize to Esther Ghey for his remarks. However, at the end of PMQs, Boris Johnson did not issue an apology.

Labour MP Jess Phillips condemned Rishi Sunak's behavior, calling him "an absolute disgrace" and criticizing his lack of empathy and understanding.
