Another By-Election Looms for Rishi Sunak

Rishi Sunak is set to face a new year's nightmare as the Tories prepare for another grueling by-election. Veteran Conservative Peter Bone has lost a recall petition and will no longer serve as the MP for Wellingborough.

Overwhelming Support for By-Election

A staggering 13% of Bone's constituents demanded the by-election, surpassing the required 10% threshold. The petition was triggered after Bone was found to have exposed himself to a male staffer in a Madrid hotel.

Allegations of Bullying and Misconduct

The Commons sleaze commissioner ruled in October that Bone had committed acts of bullying and sexual misconduct against the staffer between 2012 and 2013. Bone allegedly verbally abused, physically struck, and threw objects at the employee.

Proclaiming Innocence

Bone, who made headlines in 2018 for leaving his wife for a married physio 20 years his junior, maintains his innocence. He dismissed the allegations as "totally untrue and without foundation" and highlighted that the majority of the electorate did not sign the petition.

Seventh By-Election in 12 Months

The Wellingborough by-election will be the seventh to take place within a year. The Tories previously suffered embarrassing defeats to Labour in Mid Bedfordshire and Tamworth, both of which were considered safe seats.

A Chance for a Fresh Start

Anneliese Dodds, chair of the Labour Party, believes that voters in the constituency now have the opportunity to choose a fresh start. She criticized Bone for subjecting his constituents to a lengthy recall petition rather than resigning.

Long-Standing MP's Reign Comes to an End

Peter Bone has represented Wellingborough for the Conservatives since 2005 and won the last general election with a majority of 18,540 votes. However, his controversial behavior and the subsequent recall petition have brought an end to his tenure as MP.
