Rishi Sunak Launches Charm Offensive on Rebel MPs as Tory Civil War Erupts

Chancellor Rishi Sunak is taking action to win over Tory rebels who are critical of his Rwanda plan. A group of legal experts known as the "Star Chamber" is expected to deliver a scathing assessment of the emergency legislation. One of the main concerns is the ability of migrants to file individual claims, which could lead to delays in removal attempts due to court proceedings. In preparation for the first vote next week, Sunak's allies are reaching out to skeptical backbenchers in an effort to secure their support.

Tory Civil War Breaks Out

A civil war has erupted within the Conservative Party following the resignation of Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick. Jenrick argued that the legislation was too weak to ensure the success of the Rwanda plan. Although the bill disqualifies certain aspects of the Human Rights Act, it does not completely override it, which is something that some MPs, including Suella Braverman, had desired.

Star Chamber Assessment is Crucial

Many MPs are waiting for the verdict from the Star Chamber, chaired by Tory grandee Sir Bill Cash, before making a decision on the bill. If the legal panel gives a negative assessment, it could significantly impact the support for the legislation. Some MPs are already considering abstaining from the vote, while others may vote in favor with the intention of amending the bill later.

Funding for Rwanda

The government has faced criticism for providing an additional £150 million to Rwanda, despite no migrants being removed. Ministers defended the decision, citing the high costs of the asylum system and the need for a more efficient approach. The total amount of funding sent to Rwanda now stands at £290 million.

A spokesperson for Number 10 stated that they will be presenting their case for the Rwanda plan and emphasizing why they believe it is the best and fastest solution to address the issue of flights.
