PM Finishes Off Limited Rejig of Top Team

Rishi Sunak is preparing to replace Ben Wallace as Defence Secretary in a mini-reshuffle as soon as today. The Prime Minister is finalizing his limited reshuffle of his top team, following the resignation of Wallace, who is also stepping down from Parliament.

Imminent Announcement

Senior government sources have revealed that ministers are on standby for the imminent announcement. The Defence Secretary has reportedly submitted a list of preferred candidates to the Prime Minister, who is keeping his new appointment under wraps.

Shock Resignation

Ben Wallace announced his unexpected resignation last month, following reports that he was contemplating his future. Despite being the most popular Cabinet minister among the grassroots and at one point considered a favorite to become Prime Minister, Wallace will step down after four years in the top job.

Possible Replacements

Several names have been floated around Whitehall as potential replacements for Ben Wallace. These include Treasury minister and Rishi loyalist John Glen, Cabinet Office minister Jeremy Quinn, and Armed Forces minister James Heappey. Energy secretary Grant Shapps and former minister Liam Fox are also being tipped as potential candidates.

Wider Reshuffle Expected

Rishi Sunak is likely to save a wider reshuffle of his top team for after the party conference season and the King's Speech in November, in preparation for the next election. However, Home Secretary Suella Braverman is expected to remain in her post, despite some Tory MPs expressing reservations due to her handling of certain issues.

Cabinet Ministers at Risk

Among the ministers who may face reshuffling out of the Cabinet is Environment Secretary Therese Coffey, who previously served as deputy Prime Minister under Liz Truss. However, Downing Street has declined to comment on the timing of the upcoming reshuffle.
