Record High Migration Numbers

According to revised estimates published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), net migration into the UK reached a record high of 745,000 in the year to December 2022. This is three times higher than before Brexit, despite a Conservative Party pledge to bring overall numbers down.

Gove: Brexit Allows UK to Set Migration Rules

Levelling Up Secretary Michael Gove defended the rising migration levels, stating that Brexit has given the UK the opportunity to decide its own migration rules. He emphasized that measures to bring numbers down would not have been possible before Brexit.

Refugees and Other Factors Inflating Figures

Gove acknowledged that figures are being inflated by refugees from Ukraine and Hong Kong. He emphasized the UK's tradition of providing shelter and support for refugees.

New Measures to Control Migration

Prime Minister Boris Johnson, along with Home Secretary James Cleverly, is working on further measures to drive down migration numbers. The details of these measures are yet to be unveiled.

Business Secretary Pushes for Strong Measures

Business Secretary Kemi Badenoch expressed her support for the strongest measures possible to reduce migration. She mentioned the salary threshold for migrant workers as one possible lever to bring numbers down.

However, Badenoch emphasized the need to wait for the Home Secretary's package before discussing specifics. She also appeared to lay the blame for high migration numbers on Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
