Think Tank Suggests All EU Migrants Should Receive British Citizenship

Amidst growing tensions, senior Tories have criticized a proposal put forth by allies of Sir Keir Starmer, suggesting that all EU passport holders in the UK should be granted British citizenship. The influential think tank Labour Together has urged the Labour leader to consider granting default citizenship to the millions of EU migrants who have made the UK their home.

Pushback from Conservative Party

The proposal aims to dispel the notion that immigrants do not contribute to the economy. However, Tory deputy chairman Jonathan Gullis has strongly condemned the idea, accusing Sir Keir of a "Brexit betrayal" for potentially allowing millions of EU citizens to swiftly become UK citizens. Gullis raised concerns about compromising UK borders in exchange for a deal with the EU.

Labour's Response

Christabel Cooper, director of research at Labour Together, defended the proposal by highlighting the popularity of policies that encourage immigrants to obtain British citizenship and promote integration. On the other hand, a Labour spokesman clarified that the think tank's proposal does not align with official Labour Party policy. The party's current focus remains on addressing the shortcomings of the immigration and asylum system after years of Tory governance.
